A 10-year-old Chihuahua named Carmen Belle has found her happily ever after, just weeks after being surrendered to a shelter by her owners.

Carmen was dropped off at a Los Angeles shelter on July 2, 2025, with no explanation from the former owner Despite her fear, staff immediately recognized Carmen's gentle nature and reached out to Frosted Faces Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to helping senior pets.

"Carmen Belle was surrendered by her owner with no reason given, but despite being fearful of her new situation, it was clear to staff that she had so much love left to give," the rescue wrote on Facebook. "We made her a Frosted Face, and just two days later, she was chosen for a foster."

Volunteer Mary Jewel welcomed Carmen into her home for a two-week foster period, where the shy dog began to blossom.

Carmen's transition came with a few health challenges. She arrived overweight and needed to be spayed. After a successful surgery and dental procedure, she began her fitness journey, gradually slimming down with daily walks and plenty of care.

Kelly Smíšek, co-founder of Frosted Faces, told Newsweek that Carmen's story reflects the complex reasons senior pets often end up in shelters.

"As pets age, their medical needs often increase, and the cost of veterinary care can become overwhelming for families," Smíšek said.

"Sometimes, guardians pass away, move into care facilities, or face life transitions like job loss, divorce, or housing restrictions. Sadly, these circumstances leave people with no choice but to surrender a beloved pet."

A New Forever Home

While in foster care, Carmen caught the eye of Christine, a longtime Frosted Faces supporter who had adopted another senior dog, Zoe, in 2021. Carmen's resemblance to Zoe immediately drew her in.

"When I saw a post about needing someone to watch Carmen for a week, I volunteered," Christine told Newsweek. "I already knew from her foster updates that she was sweet, potty trained, and good with other dogs. I fell in love right away with her gentle, goofy personality."

As Carmen recovered, her bond with Christine and Zoe deepened. The little Chihuahua quickly became part of the family—snuggling on the couch, joining neighborhood walks, and even dining al fresco at local restaurants.

"I debated adopting another senior so close in age to Zoe, especially since both have heart conditions," Christine said. "But the joy Carmen brought us outweighed my fears. When her foster came to visit and Carmen looked at her with confusion and fear, I realized she loved us as much as we loved her. The little potato was home."

Now officially adopted, Carmen is thriving alongside Zoe and bringing joy to everyone she meets.

"Carmen has filled a hole in our hearts after losing our 17-year-old Cassie last year," Christine said. "She has brought so much laughter, happiness, and unconditional love. I'm forever grateful to the Frosted Faces family."
